4 WAYS TO BACKGROUND CHECK YOUR DATE
16 NOV 2013 POSTED BY CRAIG IRVING
Found someone special through an online dating site? Taking that next step and actually meeting your new friend in person can make even experienced daters anxious because you have so little to go on. I mean, how much can you really learn from a dating profile and a few back-and-forth text messages?
Fortunately, thanks to online background check sites like CheckMate.com, you don’t have to limit yourself to the information that your courtier has provided you with. Instead, you can access a vast database of government-complied public records that help you understand whether or not you are a good match.
When you background check your date online, here are four things to look for.
1) CRIMINAL HISTORY
People with a shady past will usually take measures to cover it up. Unfortunately for them, any and all criminal misdeeds, whether petty or serious, are laid bare in their public record. You can see everything from felonies that resulted in your suitor doing hard time, to speeding tickets that resulted in Saturday traffic school. Whether or not a criminal past is a deal-breaker is totally up to you, but it’s nice not to be surprised by your date’s closeted skeletons.
2) MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE RECORDS
On most mainstream dating sites, it’s just assumed that all users are unattached. Much in the same way that when you buy a children’s toy from eBay, it’s just assumed that it’s not covered in asbestos and lead paint. It’s one of those things that you shouldn’t have to check on, but you ought to just in case. Unfortunately, there are many who treat their marriage “vows” like they are marriage “suggestions”, meaning that you could unwittingly assist in a person’s infidelity simply by meeting up with someone you met online.
Fortunately, marriage records are public, so if your date was ever hitched, it will show up on a background check. And if they were married at one time, but since divorced, it will be recorded in the background check as well.
Interestingly, there is reason to believe that men are more anxious about the onset of wrinkles and losing touch with pop culture than women. According to one study, 33% of men versus 17% of women lie about their age in their online dating profile. While people who change their age might see it as a harmless fib to attempt to date younger people, do you really want to start a relationship on a foundation of untruths? See if they are telling the truth about their age by looking up their date of birth in their background check.
4) KNOWN ADDRESSES
Is your date a rambler, or do they like to stay in one place? If your potential date has ever listed an address on their driver’s license, car registration, or tax form, it is probably recorded in their public records. By viewing all known addresses, you’ll find out if your date really has lived in your city or if they are new in town.
